A rural noir about nineteen year old Harley Altmyer, left in charge of his three younger sisters in a Pennsylvania coal town after his mother is jailed for shooting his abusive father. He works two jobs and becomes fixated on the married woman up the road.

Tawni O'Dell is an American writer who grew up in Pennsylvania coal country. Back Roads was her debut, an Oprah's Book Club pick in 2000, and was filmed in 2018 with Alex Pettyfer.

For readers who like bleak American small town fiction and young narrators who withhold. What readers come back for is Harley's voice, funny in a way that makes the ending worse.
